Busy Times

Drew decided out of the blue that he wanted a pet in the house. I thought we were finally past that and even though I sometimes missed having a four legged critter around, the work entailed kept me from not missing it too much! Then all of a sudden Drew started asking again. His choices, a hamster, a fish or a kitten. I said no to a fish. Cleaning out a fish tank is not my idea of fun! A hamster only lives for a very short time. And we had this beautiful little kitten living outside already. Plus, mice control! So, we now have Milkweed inside. Millie for short. Milkweed is one of five that we brought home from my folks’ to raise as their momma disappeared. We bottle fed them all. One didn’t make it, two disappeared and unfortunately Drew ran over one with the Mule. A hard lesson for him but he pays a lot more attention now when he’s driving something. So now I’m busy with a kitten in the house. Oh the messes she makes. Especially when I forget to put my threads away for the night.

Peace Be To This House – designed to be a Christmas ornament but I love it so much I plan to frame it. It’s teeny tiny – stitched on 40 ct and so very sweet.
A sampler I stitched years ago and decided to finally frame. Simple Joys, Simple Life.
Sweet little freebies from Pinker n Punkin Quilting. Perfect for ornaments for the kids. Now to decide on how to finish them.

Which leads to stitching! I’m always busy stitching! I’ve framed a few that I dug out of my finished pile to enjoy and I’ve stitched some new things. I am caught up on orders which is a great feeling. Now to work on the kids’ ornaments for last year and this year. And maybe get a jump on next year’s too!

Making gifts for birthdays and Christmas is keeping me busy too. I made two sets of these Advent Christmas ornaments. One for the grandkids and one for Drew. We’re all ready for December 1st!

I’ve cleaned out my bedroom closet and have a pile of clothes that no longer fit. Now to decide whether to keep them or give them away. I don’t plan to gain weight again but I’m still a little leary of getting rid of them all. And Drew and I cleaned and organized the bathroom cupboards. I have this goal of getting each room picked up and organized. Unfortunately neat and tidy is extremely hard for me! But I’m working on it!

This past weekend we had beautiful weather and decided to take advantage of it and spend time at my folks’ cutting down trees and splitting wood. For some reason I always dread the thought of this but once we get started, it’s work that I really enjoy. Their timbers were destroyed after the storm that went through earlier this year and Dad has been wanting to get some of the downed trees taken care of so that’s what we worked on. Some of the trees were already down, some needed to come down. Joe did most of the downing and cutting while I used the splitter to split the logs and Mom, Dad and Drew stacked the logs on the trailer. We were all tired by the time we were finished last night, and cold too as the wind had picked up and the temperature dropped, but it was such a great feeling to have gotten so much accomplished! And boy did I sleep good!

Drew and Rambler took a nap while waiting for the work to get started!
A fall morning in the timber.

The garden is cleaned off and put to rest for the winter. The chickens have been cleaned out and bedded down for cold weather. The flowers are all sleeping. I love this time of year. I love all the seasons and am thankful I live where we get to enjoy each one. But I love this season the best. I enjoy the darker days and the time we are able to spend slowing down. A time for lamps and soft light and blankets to cuddle up in. I look forward to the holidays but even more, I look forward to that time after the holidays. It’s almost like we’re being given permission to settle in for a time. To be calm and quiet. To reflect on what has passed and to get ready for the what is to come. It’s my favorite time of the year.

Meet Rubio

Pretty Miss Rubio

This is Rubio. She lives at my Dad and Mom’s along with her goat friend, Hazel. They are both Boer Goats. Hazel is Drew’s goat. Given to him by his Great Uncle Jerry. At the time Uncle Jerry gave her to Drew we didn’t have a place to keep her so Dad took her in. And he became attached! So, he then brought Rubio home from Uncle Jerry’s so Hazel could have a companion and they both live together at Dad and Mom’s where they are spoiled rotten! They even get daily treats of Fruit Loops!

There’s Hazel in the background!

Yesterday evening we went to Dad and Mom’s for supper. We roasted hot dogs over a fire in the backyard. Drew brought Rambler along and Rubio was fascinated. Dad doesn’t have a dog anymore so she doesn’t really see dogs much at all. Hazel paid no attention but Miss Rubio stood on this rock for a very very long time and just watched everything we did. I’m not sure if she was keeping an eye on Rambler or Drew or if she just liked the commotion of all of us out in the backyard. It was funny as she usually pays no attention to us at all.

It was a beautiful evening to sit outside.

It was a beautiful evening. The humidity had died down and there was a nice breeze. A wiener roast in the backyard was the perfect ending to a busy weekend of working on projects and getting a few things done. Rubio seemed to think so too!

Winter Days

I’m sitting here munching on dehydrated apple chips from the apples we picked at a friend’s house this past fall. They sure taste good on this cold, foggy winter day! I’m thankful I broke down and bought a dehydrator. I got it thinking we would make beef jerky and so far, that’s the one thing we haven’t tried!

It’s been a quiet few days around here. It’s cold and there’s lots of snow on the ground. I enjoy these days and would enjoy them even more if Drew did. He needs to be able to get out and run. Being cooped up is not for him. We’re planning a trip to the library later this week. We have to make an appointment to be able to get in. Hoping to find some books for our mammal study we’re starting and hoping to find a good book for him to read. With all the books in this house that his siblings read you would think something would grab his interest but so far nothing.

I’ve been busy stitching orders and am finally caught up so last night I switched things up and stitched a chicken. No reason. Just ran across the free pattern, had some fabric begging to be used and ran with it. A little bright spot in the kitchen to cheer us up on these cold winter days!

Drew learned to run the snow blower and got to put it to use over the weekend. He thought it was fun to try and bury me in snow! We went on a road trip before the snow hit. Joe showed us where they hunted for deer and told us about the hunt! Drew and Rambler must have gotten bored, they both fell asleep! There’s been a lot of fort making going on and I’m ready to have my living room back! And then there’s Possum, just enjoying being King of the Castle!

Thoughts on Tuesday

Our Thanksgiving was simple this year. We went to Dad and Mom’s. Aaron and Eric came to eat and stayed most of the day. Abby and Jeremy and the kids decided to stay home. We understood but sure did miss them. It was good for Drew to spend time with his brothers and it was fun to see them together and enjoying themselves. They all three played a game on their phones together. Drew and Aaron are so much alike in their mannerisms. I see it all the time in Drew at home but seeing them together really showcases that. Drew and Eric don’t share that but they look more alike and they giggle. Oh my goodness do they giggle. It is fun to be with them when they are so engrossed in what they are doing together and they both start giggling. It just makes everyone smile!

We spent the rest of the holiday weekend working on staining our countertops. We bought the counters a couple years ago and I am so excited to finally be working on them. We’re hoping to get them put in this weekend. In the meantime I have everything off the counters in the kitchen so Joe can measure and do what he needs to do. Once we start the actual installation the counters and sink will have to come out. I’m not looking forward to that part but the end product will definitely be worth it.

Yesterday Drew built his cookie cottage. He went simple this year. I’m thinking he’s starting to outgrow this project. And that’s okay, I’ll miss doing it with him but he is growing up. It was such a beautiful day that we decided to go for a walk. We walked around the meadow as Drew now calls it. Rambler started out on a leash, which of course he hated and he soon was running free. While we were doing that, Joe was putting the finishing touches on the camper to get it ready for winter and then we hauled it off to storage. It’s always a sad day when we haul it away but then come spring it is so fun to bring it home! We really took advantage of having the trailer this past season as we camped more then we ever have in one summer. We were even able to camp and homeschool, which was wonderful! We store the trailer about an hour away so I brought my bag of crochet along and finished another dishcloth. I have more dishcloths than I will ever use. I think it’s now time to learn to crochet something a little more advanced!

Rambler

We got a new puppy a few months ago. He’s a Black Lab Red Heeler mix and we road tripped to Missouri to get him. We ended up taking backroads and being out in the middle of nowhere to the point I thought we should turn around and go home. I was wondering if maybe we were not in a safe situation. Joe of course thought I was nuts and kept going. And he was right. I would say the lady who we got him from was the crazy one. Dead end road, just her and some strangers who showed up to pick out a puppy. But it was fine. She was great. Drew picked out the puppy he wanted and we brought Rambler home. The name Rambler comes from Drew’s love of the Nash Rambler. Another vintage love of his! Well, I had to take Rambler to the vet yesterday. He was limping and not putting any pressure on his right paw. And the poor guy came home like this:

A splint and a cone of shame. The vet thinks he fractured his paw, possibly in more than one place, and to be on the safe side he decided to put a splint on. Which means he can’t get it wet. And of course it’s the middle of winter with snow, freezing rain, mud everwhere. So the poor guy will be spending the next two weeks in the shop where he won’t be doing much of anything besides resting and eating and going outside for potty breaks with plastic wrapped around his leg. But only if the ice melts. He’s so awkward with that splint, I’m afraid he’ll hurt himself even more on the ice. It’s going to be a long two weeks.

Free Ranging

Blackie didn’t get to roam quite as much as the others – she got to sit on Drew’s lap and be cuddled and loved! She seems to enjoy Drew – she doesn’t give much of struggle to be picked up!

Drew was so excited yesterday. His dad let him let the chickens out to free range for the first time. They loved it but were a little “chicken”! They didn’t wander far from the coop. I’m sure that won’t last long and soon they will be all over the yard. Poor Isee was put in her kennel so they could roam but after awhile we decided to go ahead let her out and she was perfect. She tried a couple of times to check things out but as soon as someone called her off she was fine and soon forgot all about them. Not bad for a bird dog! The chickens went right back to their coop when Drew went to put them away and they were exhausted – they all sat down and fell asleep!

I won’t be posting again until after the 4th. Lots to do the next few days and hope to stay away from electronics and just enjoy these next few days!

The Rest Of Our Memorial Day Weekend

I had two things I planned to get done over the long weekend – help Joe finish the lean to and hang some lights I had made on the pergola. What did get done? The dog kennel and lots of fun! Sunday we spent the day in Des Moines with my sister. They have neighbors who own a “lake” where they get to camp for free and they are the only ones who camp there. It’s 10 minutes from their home in Norwalk so they go out often. Lots of fishing, playing in the sand and yummy food was had by all! We were there all day and didn’t get home until after 9:00 p.m. and we were wore out!

The lake was an old quarry and back in the 90’s it was known as Clearwater Lake. They held concerts there and the lake was used for swimming. The Beach Boys played there at one time. I remember hearing about it but Joe and I were busy starting a family in the 90’s and never went. The old stage is still there and the old lifeguard stand. It’s a neat place for Beth to get to camp.

Monday saw us up and revamping the kennel. We made it out of hog panels and steel posts. The dog house is in one corner and it’s very roomy. Izzy had spent the past few years living in a horse stall so we thought she would enjoy the freedom of this kennel. And she seemed to be okay with it. As long as we were outside. As soon as we went in the house she would get out. We discovered she was climbing up the hog panels and then jumping out! So, we put a chain link cover over the top. And we covered one end with a tarp for shade. I know – it sounds very redneck. But it doesn’t look too bad and she is nice and safe. Plus – it didn’t cost us anything as we used what we had. She can’t get out, she has a nice insulated dog house, plenty of shade, grass to lie in, food and water. She seems happy and we can relax knowing she is comfortable and safe.

I never tire of the beautiful views at Belva Deer!

After finishing up the kennel and eating lunch Joe mowed the yard while I finished planting flowers and swept the deck. Then we took Izzy to Belva Deer where we met Dad and Mom for a picnic. Eric met us out there too. Izzy loved it. She is such a people person and she loved on everyone and she loved going for a walk. She was wore out after so much excitement and fell asleep on the way home. Then when we got home she went straight to her dog house and laid down. I think she’s liking her new family and home!

For a weekend with no plans except working around the house we sure did a lot of running but it was also a relaxing and fun weekend. Lots of family fun!

A Visitor, Izzy and a Visit With Dr. Anderson

This beautiful guy was a visitor by our backdoor yesterday. Isn’t he pretty? He was all spread out on the patio then later I saw he was sitting on my birdhouse by the backdoor. And then he was gone. I think he just wanted to show off his colors for us to enjoy!

Wednesday was Drew’s last day of school. He got out at 10:40. We came home, ate some lunch then headed to Ottumwa for his hearing check up to see if getting his tonsils and adenoids out and tubes in his ears helped with his hearing and the fluid build up. He was so worried. He thought if he didn’t pass the hearing test he’d have the surgery again. We explained it all to him but he still worried. He got so excited during the test we he realized he really could hear. You could see what a relief it was for him!

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Drew and I spent most of the day outside working in the yard, transplanting flowers and playing with Izzy. I didn’t get everything done I was wanting to but it was nice to get as much done as I did! Later in the early evening Drew had a t-ball scrimmage then we took him over to Grandpa and Grandma’s to spend the night and then visit Braxton today. Joe and I drove out to Belva Deer to see if the campground was full for Memorial Day and it was. I was kind of hoping he’d suggest we pull the camper out but he didn’t and it’s just as well as we wouldn’t have found a spot anyway.

Dr. Anderson has the neatest fish aquarium in his waiting room. It is huge and is full of all kinds of fish. This is only a small portion of the whole thing. We see something different every time we visit and it makes waiting to much more enjoyable. We sometimes wish we would get to wait longer as Dr. Anderson is good about getting people in quickly although I’m not complaining. Short waits at the doctor’s office is a good thing!

Today it’s raining. I’m hoping the rain moves on so I can finish with my flowers although I might have to mud them in! I’m hoping to get it all finished today so I can help Joe make a kennel for Izzy tomorrow and hopefully finish up the lean to. I have projects I need his help with but want his lean to done first. Why is it that our lives get so busy that we can’t finish a simple project in a decent time? Oh well. Hopefully this long weekend ahead we can get a few things done, a few things started and maybe take some time to run up to Des Moines and visit my sister where they are camping. That can be Drew’s adventure! I’m going to stay away from the computer too as much as I can. I want to enjoy these next few days with my guys!

Meet Izzy

This is Izzy, the newest member of our family. She’s a five year old Vizsla and we brought her home last night. We lost our Black Lab Elly about a year and a half ago and knew we would get another dog eventually but hadn’t found the right fit for our family yet. Then Mom heard from a friend that she had two Vizslas that she was trying to find homes for. Her husband had passed away and she was needing to find homes for all of their animals as she wasn’t able to care for them all herself.

We headed over to her house after supper and fell in love with Izzy. We weren’t looking for a puppy. We were looking for a dog that was out of the puppy stage and had been worked with a little bit. We thought eventually we would go to a shelter and look for one but we are so happy with Izzy. She’s a little older than we were thinking we wanted but she’s such a gentle and calm dog. She loves Drew and she just seemed like the perfect fit. I tried to get a good picture of her but she was way more interested in checking out her surroundings than posing for a picture!

Joe is hoping to hunt with her. She was pointing the chickens when we got her home! And Drew is looking forward to summer and playing with his new friend. I’m just glad to have a dog again. I think every little boy needs a dog and for some reason I always feel better knowing we have a dog outside keeping an eye on us. I think our family is complete now. I think we have enough pets now. Pierre Piddlepants the cat, Esther, Ethel, Beaky and Blacky the chickens and now Izzy the dog. Now to get Drew to do his chores!
